Novosibirsk or Новосибирск in Russian is situated in Siberia.
With a population of over 1.5 million people, Novosibirsk is the third most populous city in Russia.
The city was founded in 1893 as a transport hub. The city was originally called Novonikolayevsk (Новониколаевск), in honor of both Saint Nicholas and of the reigning Tsar Nicholas II.
It became a large industrial centre during the Stalin period. In 1962, it became the first city in the world to reach a population of 1 million people within 70 years of being founded.
